Ciao Frank & Marion

The other day I got an e-mail from
Frank and Marion, the handsome British couple from Cambridge we met on the train to Bologna two weeks ago.

On the train Frank had mentioned some pictures he had taken when he and Marion visited San Michele in the 70's. I am happy to share one of the pictures with you.

Marion is standing, I think, on the pathway right below the pergola of Villa San Michele. She hasn't changed a bit, maybe a bit longer hair back then.

In honor of Frank & Marion and in celebration of chance encounters we have decided to stay one night in Bologna on our way home on Wednesday, instead of going straight to Stockholm.

Everyone says Bologna is a beautiful city so, of course we'll go.

This is indeed the beauty of train travel - all those extra stopovers, just because you're in the neighborhood. Everyone should travel this way! When are you home then?

I never did do the InterRail/Eurail thing, it's about time.

Apart from the speed of airfare being superior (if you want to travel fast) I can't think of anything that beats going by train.

We'll be back in Stockholm on Friday evening if all goes well.

It feels sad going home to the cold weather. (Luckily, indoor heating will be much better. When it's cold outside here it's also very cold inside.)

Bologna is beautiful, I was born in a small town about 20km from B.
My personal un-asked architect's suggestions: piazza Santo Stefano (visit the church, it's called "Sette Chiese" and reproduces the holy places of Christ's Life); via Calvature area (market, shops, cafes); a climb to the Asinelli Tower; a walk in via Zamboni (university area); check if there's something going on at the Teatro Comunale, it's an amazing building from Bibbiena); a walk to the Santuario di San Luca (overlooking the city); don't miss a osteria tour in via del Pratello.

Dear Valeria,

Thank you so much your tips, however, sadly, I didn't get them until we had left the lovely city of Bologna.

We only had a late afternoon/evening and we did the ususal first-time-visit-tourist stuff (the San Petronio Basilica etc) and had dinner at a place called, hm, wish I remembered, can't find the receipt right now on the bumpy train running ferociously through Sweden, home to Stockholm.

I would have loved to visit via Zamboni but it will have to be next time.

Cordiali saluti,

Lars
